China and India are the world’s two biggest importers of thermal coal and both are moving rapidly to transform their energy markets. The implications for Australia are huge. If coal is indeed in structural decline, stranded assets await – mines in the Galilee Basin, Whitehaven, Shenhua to name a few. Tim Buckley, Director of Energy Finance Studies, Australasia, for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, draws on 25 years of financial market experience to survey the outlook for Australian coal.

Australia’s coal industry is looking increasingly shaky – on purely financial grounds. Chinese imports are falling dramatically and reliance on India to take up the slack is ‘courageous’ at best given the Indian government’s growing push into solar.

Finance expert Tim Buckley will review the financial health of the coal industry and the implications for large controversial coal mines in Australia ranging from Adani’s megamine in the Galilee Basin to coal port expansions at Abbot Point and Newcastle, and the Shenhua Watermark mine on the Liverpool Plains.
